About the team

When I try to write the Glebe North Football Club history, I must determine what will be a personal and selective account of our club, which dates back to 1945.

After the Second World War, interest in football showed a huge boom. During this time, football clubs were formed in many parts of Ireland, including the Glebe North too. A football tradition flourished in Balbriggan for many years, with the Smyth and Company factory fielding a team in the 1930s.

The late Jack Kennedy, a city commissioner, was instrumental in the founding of the Smyco team and was also involved in a team called Seaforth. Because of his participation in AUL, a Glebe North his young club entered the AUL in 1945, and the rest, as they say, is history. The Glebe North name, incidentally, comes from the area in the parish of Balbriggan where the club first played. This area was located across the main road from the present site of Wavin Pipes Limited.

The word Glebe refers to church land usually attached to a church or presbytery. Names inextricably linked to the club were Freddie Harper, Nick Dunne, Gerry Nixon and Martin Fanning. Sadly, these luminaries have passed away in recent years, but their footballing exploits and commitment to the club will never be forgotten. Many senior citizens will remember Glebe North appearance in the Leinster Junior Cup, which took place at Tolka Park in 1949. Their opponents were Whitehall Rangers and the game attracted a huge crowd and recorded a gate receipt of £1,800!

On the way to the finals Glebe North Beat Drogheda United 2-1 in a thrilling replay at Market Green. The final was also replayed with Glebe North losing 5-1 after losing three of their men to injury! Substitutes were unheard of in those harsh times.

Many former players have received international honours; Anthony Guildea and Michael Reid were both capped by Ireland at junior level. This was received as a great honor for the club and its members. The club's first president was Frank Carton, with Peter Murray and Liam Rooney serving as first secretary and treasurer, respectively. The cottage on the club's official logo is owned by Dessie McCann, behind which the "Glebe North" lay land called
